The Concept2 StrengthErg is a compact, multifunctional strength training machine.

It uses the power of air resistance to deliver a comprehensive and safe workout without the need to deal with weight plates, racks and barbells. You can apply as much or as little force as you want and the StrengthErg will accurately measure and display your result. Our free ErgData app gives you the performance tracking and analysis needed to achieve your goals.

Available to purchase in two options:

    • With a Performance Monitor (PM5) plus device holder for use with ErgData
    • With a device holder only. Use your own device and ErgData

    The Strength of Air Resistance

The StrengthErg is powered by Concept2’s signature flywheel technology, which can be varied in intensity depending on the combination of the damper setting and the amount of effort the user produces. The responsive nature of air resistance results in a variable load depending on the user’s strength. A lower damper setting, or less air resistance, produces a lighter feel when pressing or pulling. A higher damper setting, or more air resistance, produces a heavier feel when pressing or pulling.

Another advantage of responsive resistance is that as your strength varies from one point in a lift to another, the resistance reacts to match. In traditional lifting, you can only put on the bar as much weight as you can lift at the weakest point in the lift, which may not be enough to challenge your muscles in the stronger part of the lift.

    Three Different Stations

You can move easily between three basic positions, with a wide range of variations and custom movements possible from each position. You can choose whether to work out at a low number of reps for a high amount of force, or you can choose to do a high number of reps and work on your muscular endurance. It’s quick and easy to adjust the damper setting to make the movement slower or faster, so you can get the exact relationship between speed and force that you want for your training.

    Track And Analyze Your Progress

With our free ErgData app, your workouts will be recorded automatically so you can track exactly how you’re improving, charting your results for each exercise.

ErgData provides additional real-time metrics to what you see on the PM5, such as drive speed, drive length, time under tension and more. It also has other features to help your training, including making it simple to set up and program your workouts and sharing your results with friends and coaches, as well as integrating with our Online Logbook.

    Simple To Use

The StrengthErg delivers a concentric workout, offering a controlled and efficient way to strengthen muscles. As it’s a guided movement, it’s safe for anyone to use, no matter their previous experience. There is no risk of failing to complete a repetition, or being “stuck under the bar”. This makes the StrengthErg ideal to use for a wide audience who want to improve their strength or benchmark their progress. It’s also easy for multiple people to use the machine if training together or in a circuit format – there’s no need to adjust weights: just hop straight on.

How does the StrengthErg compare to traditional weight training?

It is likely the score you see for force on the StrengthErg will differ from the score you get using traditional free weights over the same exercise, such as for the leg press.

In traditional weight training, the amount you can lift is determined by your weakest point in the movement, leaving the stronger parts of the lift under-challenged. The StrengthErg, however, automatically adjusts resistance to match your effort, ensuring your muscles are fully engaged throughout the entire motion. Where you can push harder, the resistance increases, maximizing the effectiveness of every part of the rep. With concentric training, there is also no resistance on the return of the movement.

The StrengthErg minimizes injury risk by eliminating the need to manage heavy weights. Its responsive resistance makes it a safer and more accessible option for all users. Traditional weight training often requires a spotter to ensure safety, especially for those handling heavier loads where lift failure can occur. With the StrengthErg, you cannot fail a rep.

Do I need to buy a Performance Monitor?

Unlike other Concept2 equipment such as the RowErg, it is possible to use the StrengthErg without a Performance Monitor. This is because all the calculations are done in a hub called ErgLink that sits below the flywheel. Both the monitor and ErgData connect wirelessly to ErgLink. Using ErgData, which can be done with or without the monitor, will give you the most detailed data.

If the StrengthErg will be in a multi-user environment like a gym, or used by people who may not necessarily have ErgData, then we recommend that you buy the StrengthErg with a Performance Monitor. This allows anyone to use the StrengthErg and view their workout with no additional device or app needed.

If the StrengthErg will only be used in a home gym, and with a limited number of users who will always be using ErgData to record their results, you may wish to purchase it without a Performance Monitor and just use ErgData to view your workout.

What does the StrengthErg show on the monitor and in ErgData?

Force: At the completion of each rep the monitor will calculate and display the average force you have applied through the range of the movement. When you have ended your set the result screen will display the set average force, as well as the value of your best rep of that set. Force can be shown in either pounds or kilograms.

Work: Work is a combination of the force you apply and the distance of your movement. Work is calculated and displayed for each rep. It is also accumulated during the set to give a total work value. Work is recorded in kilogram-metres.

Your Rep count is displayed. And a Rep timer will keep you aware of cadence. If you have connected with a heart rate monitor, heart rate will display on the monitor

Using ErgData, you can see all of the above, plus some additional metrics for each rep:

    Drive Length

    Drive Time

    Drive Speed

    Time Under Tension

    What is concentric training?

There are two key phases of muscle movement: concentric (muscle shortening) and eccentric (muscle lengthening). The concentric section is the part of the exercise usually considered as the lift portion—it’s the pressing bit of a bench press or lifting the bar from the ground in a deadlift. The Concept2 StrengthErg focuses on the concentric movements offering a controlled and efficient way to strengthen muscles without the added strain of eccentric loading. Between reps there is no resistance and should be used as recovery.

Who would benefit from the StrengthErg?

The StrengthErg will suit anyone who wants the benefits of traditional resistance training. If you're looking to build muscle, maintain performance, or develop muscular endurance, the StrengthErg will help you.

The safe, guided nature of the StrengthErg makes it ideal for people new to strength training, as well as groups like juniors or the active aging market, where the possibility of lifting to failure may want to be avoided. It also makes it ideal for testing individuals who may or may not have weight training experience.

The compact footprint of the StrengthErg makes it suitable for smaller locations, where squat racks, benches, bars and spare weights can take up a lot of space and weight.

The StrengthErg can also be used by a wide range of athletes without requiring any adjustment, so if you're training in groups, it makes for a much quicker and more efficient workout without the need to adjust weights or settings each time.
